Monika Buch

Monika Buch (Spanje 1936) werd in Valencia geboren, waar ze ook opgroeide. Die levensfase speelt nog steeds een belangrijke rol in in haar werk. Het licht, de kleuren en de zee. Maar ook de mozaieken, tegels en andere overblijfselen uit de Arabische tijd hebben voor een deel haar esthetische voorkeuren bepaald. Monika Buch studeerde in Ulm Duitsland aan de beroemde Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG Ulm), waar ze ook haar latere echtgenoot Bertus Mulder uit Nederland ontmoette, die daar architectuur studeerde. Max Bill was er in die tijd de rector. De schilderijen en objecten van Monika Buch kenmerken zich door het onderzoek van vorm en kleur en de relatie tot elkaar, de systematische toe-passing van kleurreeksen in geometrische structuren en het aftasten van de grenzen van de waarneming.

Monika Buch (Spain 1936) was born in Valencia, where she also grew up.That phase of life still plays an important role in her work. The light, the colors and the sea. But the mosaics, tiles and other relics from the Arab era have also partly determined her aesthetic preferences. Monika Buch studied in Ulm Germany at the famous Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG Ulm), where she also met her later husband Bertus Mulder from the Nether-lands, who studied architecture there. Max Bill was the headmaster there at the time. Monika Buch’s paintings and objects are characterized by the investigation of form and color and their relationship to each other, the systematic application of color series in geometric structures and the exploration of the boundaries of perception.

Tije Domburg (NL 1947): “Ik maak geometrisch abstracte kunst door het steeds weer anders opbouwen of rangschikken van grote aantallen eenvoudige elementen of bouwstenen tot een nieuw totaalbeeld. Die bouwstenen kunnen keramische buisjes zijn die alleen in lengte van elkaar verschillen, of stroken papier die meer of minder vaak gedraaid zijn voor-dat ze op een paneel worden gelijmd. Maar het kunnen ook de cijfers 0 t/m 9 zijn, of grote groepen van de vier basen van het DNA, of zoals nu in mijn recente serie: duizenden perforaties in plexiglas. Het gaat in mijn werk altijd over chaos en ordening; over rumoer en rust; over stilte en beweging. En daarbij is het totaal meer dan de som der delen.”

Tije Domburg (NL 1947): “I make geometric-abstract art by continually constructing or arranging large numbers of simple elements or building blocks differently to create a new overall image. These building blocks can be ceramic tubes that differ only in length, or strips of paper that have been twisted more or less often before being glued to a panel. But it could also be the numbers 0 to 9, or large groups of the four bases of DNA, or as in my recent series: thousands of perforations in plexiglass. My work is always about chaos and order; about noise and tranquility; about silence and movement. And the whole is more than the sum of its parts.”
